Against the backdrop of rapid development in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, this paper uses panel data from 31 provinces in China from 2008 to 2023 to explore the impact of AI technology on residents' labour income. The study finds that AI technology can significantly promote the growth of residents' labour income. This conclusion remains robust after separately excluding early samples and municipalities. Furthermore, the labour income of residents in central and low-income regions is significantly affected by AI technology. Based on these findings, this paper proposes policy recommendations: constrain and regulate the development of AI technology to ensure its benefits are shared by the people. Central regions should strengthen the popularisation of AI technology; western and northeastern regions should address the shortcomings in AI application; and eastern regions should optimise their distribution mechanisms. Increased policy and resource allocation should be directed towards low-income regions to leverage AI technology and narrow regional income gaps.
