Abstract

Differential mobility analyzers (DMAs) are widely used in atmospheric and air monitoring, semiconductor manufacturing, standard particle generation, and related fields because of their capability to classify particles in the submicrometer and nanometer size ranges. Over the past few decades, various DMA configurations have been developed to improve measurement accuracy and extend the detectable particle size range. This review provides a detailed overview of the operating principles, theoretical foundations, and historical development of DMAs, with particular emphasis on structural innovations in cylindrical differential mobility analyzers and parallel-plate differential mobility analyzers. Finally, the development trends and future research directions of DMAs are discussed in detail.
